Introduction
In addition to writing a fine turn of prose, Edmund Crispin
was quite active as a composer under his real name, Bruce Montgomery.
As is clear from books like 'Holy Disorders' and 'Swan Song',
the dual personalities of composer and author often existed in
tandem in Crispin/Montgomery, and his musical work should not
be overlooked as a part of the whole Crispin canon.
My thanks are due to Donna Goldthwaite for providing some
of the following information, which is also to be found in the
book entitled 'Twentieth Century Crime and Mystery Writers',
edited by John M. Reilly. Thanks also to the several people who
wrote in to tell me about the availability of the Concertino,
the portion of the Oxford Requiem, and the Carry On disc.

Film Music
Additionally, Montgomery has to his credit unpublished music
for some thirty-eight films.
Perhaps
most famously, he wrote music for several of the Carry On films.
A collection of some of this music has been released. You may
order it from the ASV web site by clicking
on the link.
Some of the films for which Crispin wrote music include:
- The Brides of Fu Manchu (1966)
- Carry On Cruising (1962)
- Twice Round the Daffodils (1962)
- Carry On Regardless (1961)
- Raising the Wind (1961) - Composer/Writer (?)
- Apparently a comedy about students at a music college attempting
to find unorthodox methods of raising money. The listing at Blackstar
does not give any writing credit, but IMDB
lists him as both writer and composer of the film's music. The
film features a number of 'Carry On' and 'Doctor' regulars, apparently
it is one of that genre. I have never seen the film, but am looking
for a copy. It appears to have been out of print in the UK for
almost a decade. If anyone can
help with additional details, please drop me a line.
