the Gerald Durrell Archive

a Tribute to the Man, His Life, and His Work

My first encounter with the work of Gerald Durrell is almost subliminal, it is so far distant. I remember, at some point in the mid-to-late 80s, seeing a rather curious television programme, in which a Greek man and a small English boy were wandering around an island. At the time the programme must have made little or no impression, for it was not until several years after having finally read My Family and Other Animals that I realise what it was that I had seen. I came to the work of Gerald Durrell indirectly, through the work of his brother, Lawrence, who I have chronicled elsewhere.
