Blue Thirst
- First Published:
Santa Barbara, CA, Capra Press, 1975
Transcriptions
(slightly edited, according to the Illustrated Checklist)
of two talks given by Durrell while on a visit to California.
'Blue Thirst' was presented in the Beckmann Auditorium at Caltech,
while 'Propaganda and Impropaganda' was given at Claremont College
in Pomona - no dates are given in the book for these lectures,
but presumably they would have been given at some time in the
previous year. In his introduction, Durrell notes that these
essays are presented in a largely unedited form, as 'they seemed
more actual that way'.
The book was produced in both a softcover
and a limited edition hardcover (the former is depicted at left,
above). It is illustrated with black and white photographs, which
primarily seem to date to Durrell's time in Greece and her islands
in the 1930s, with the exception of the last photo, which is
of Durrell and Henry Miller in 1973 - old friends reunited.
All in all, Blue Thirst is a charming little
volume, well worth the time of Durrell devotees to try and locate
a copy, as it has been out of print for close on twenty years
(or so I would guess).
