Caesar's Vast Ghost: Aspects of Provence

First Published: London, Faber & Faber, Ltd., 1990.
Also Published: New York, Arcade Publishing, 1990 (First US edition).

The final book published during Durrell's life, Caesar's Vast Ghost is a tribute to the land in which Durrell spent the final decades of his life, in the south of France. It may be difficult for readers even a decade later to understand the attraction that France has always held for writers and artists, and those on the wrong side of the francophobe line might do best to hold their attention on Durrell's earlier books about places.

In the tradition of his other books about islands, Caesar's Vast Ghost is not a travel guide, it is a reflection on a landscape, the people in it, and the ideas and thoughts that are engendered by the collision of those in the fecund mind of a writer of Durrell's unquestionable power and skill.
