The Greek Islands
- First Published:
London, Faber & Faber, Ltd., 1978.
- Also Published: New
York, Viking Penguin Books, Ltd., 1978,
Durrell's
book of the islands of Greece, a landscape with which he had
become familiar between the 1930s and 1950s, was an opportunity
to revisit those places he had come to know twenty to fourty
years before, as well as an opportunity to visit those which
he had not previously known. Illustrated with colour and black-and-white
photographs, this book is a systematic examination of the many
islands of the Aegean Sea.
While Durrell's knowledge of Greece proves
as insightful and entertaining as ever, this book is perhaps
not to the quality of his previous island books.
It is divided into the following sections:
- The Ionian Islands
- The Southern Aegean
- The Southern Sporades
- The Northern Sporades
- The Northern Aegean
- The Cyclades
- The Home Group
An appendix is included, listing the flowers
and festivals of the Greek Islands.
