A Smile in the Mind's Eye
- First Published:
New York, Universe Books, 1982
Lawrence
Durrell's meeting with Taoist writer and philosopher Jolan Chang
is recounted in A Smile in the Mind's Eye, in which Durrell
describes the visit which Chang paid him at his home in Sommières,
and the interest in Taoism which brought Durrell to Chang's attention.
Always a keen student of philosophies and different schools of
thought, Durrell depicts himself as a willing, enthusiastic foil
during Chang's visit.
An aside, it may be thought, from Durrell's
central work of the great novels (this visit took place in the
midst of his writing of the Avignon Quintet), but an entertaining
one, filled with those touches and distinctness of voice which
make A Smile in the Mind's Eye an unmistakeable part of
Durrell's body of work.
