The
Antrobus stories are a product of Durrell's many years of official
and semi-official positions in various embassies of Her Majesty's
Government in Belgrade, Argentinia, and Cyprus. Set in a suspiciously
familiar Balkan country, the stories of the consumate diplomat
Antrobus are intensely reminiscent of the work of the great P. G. Wodehouse, particularly
the Mr. Mulliner stories, as well as those recounting the yarns
of the Oldest Member. Cheered by Richard Aldington against Durrell's
protestations of their modest worth and Henry Miller's distaste,
these are delightful short tales, in the finest tradition of
satire and humour writing, and are well worth reading again today.
The stories in this volume include:
- The Ghost Train
- Case Histories
- Frying the Flag
- Jots and Tittles
- For Immediate Release
- White Man's Milk
- Drage's Divine Discontent
- "Noblesse Oblige"
- Call of the Sea
