Probably Lawrence Durrell's most ambitious verse play, and certainly the longest of the three, Sappho came to be so long that Durrell himself included instructions for the cutting of the scenes involving Diomedes (parts of Scene II and all of Scene V) in the hopes of shortening the running time.
