Durrell's
1966 volume of verse consists largely of poems on Greek and some
Classical themes - verses such as 'Eleusis', after the ancient
pilgrimage site fourteen miles from Athens reached along the
Sacred Way, and 'Moonlight', which memorably begins 'I cannot
read Pliny without terror' are a further extension on the themes
closest to his heart.
The Black Swan edition (at left) features
a cover illustration by Durrell, as well as black-and-white photographs
