Dear Ms. Kuhlwind:
This is in response to your letter of October 18, 1994,
concerning which dogs are approved for rabies vaccine and its
effectiveness in the various breeds.
Rabies vaccines are approved for all domestic dogs of the
scientific name "Canis lupis familiaris."' This would include:
Dingo, Canaan Dog, New Guinea, Singing Dog, and the Carolina Dog.
You also asked which breeds of dogs were studied for the approval
of the vaccine. Each vaccine company performs effectiveness
studies on various breeds of dogs and to gather this information
from company records would require a Freedom of Information
(FOIA) request. The F0IA office may be contacted at the
following address:
USDA, APHIS, FOIA
6505 Belcrest Road, Room 671-FB
Hyattsville, MD 20782
(301) 436-8296
If you need further assistance on this issue, please contact the
Biotechnology, Biologics, and Environmental Protection unit,
Veterinary Biologics Staff (vaccine approvals are made through
their office) at (301) 436-8245.
sincerely,
/s/Dale F. Schwindman
